Run a Football Club, Or Run it into the Ground?

We’ve been working on this for some time now, and we’re delighted to say it’s finally with us: Football Tycoon. Think you can do better with immense wealth than all the other big club owners? Prove it.

Pick an owner, then buy a club and lead them to glory… or screw them over for personal gain. Totally up to you.

The only tip I’ll give is that final score is based on wealth combined with fan appeal at your last club, so if a few clubs go under at your command, it might not matter in the greater scheme of things.

  1. Hey guys @ MB! Congrats for the game, it’s a great idea.
However, I cannot cash in the money from merchandising, which is a lot. What can be wrong? What can I do? Please help me reach the heights of footballing success.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. I’m sorry for this because I’m a huge fan but i feel this game was released way to early because there are a lot of faults with it such as Arsenal winning the premiership over and over again even if you win it, being able to get in the billions very easily, not being given rewards for winning a cup and league. Some improvements all four professional leagues, an actual player database something like football manager but not as detailed because I know its flash, an actual challenge system because I was able to get a loan and get a lot of good players and was easily able to pay the loan back, sense of realism because I was able to get a hundred million with a championship side.

  3. Thanks for the feedback, guys. Will respond to you both in turn…

@Tavinho: The merchandising money should be paid straight into your club’s weekly income, so you should already have it. Let me know if I’ve misunderstood…

@A fan: Thanks for your detailed feedback – we really appreciate it.

To answer your questions, we’d actually been working on this game for a fair few months. It’s a really complex game under the surface, and in a way I’m delighted it seems too simple!

At various points in development it was both too easy and too hard – in the end, we had to err on the side of making thigs easier, because it’s a very complex game, and we didn’t want the game to flop because of it.

As for the changes – the Arsenal bug should now be fixed, but the others are pretty big additions. We’re thinking of making more games along those lines though, so we’ll keep the ideas on. What might be an idea is to offer “casual” and “realistic” difficulties to keep both sets of players happy.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback – it’s really helpful. :)

  4. Big bug – when a club takes out a loan it is credited with 2x the amount but only has to pay 1x back – easy money!

Or – when the chairman lends money to the club the money is credited at 3x but only charged to the chairman 1x.

Also, it should not be possible to set -ve ticket prices or have -ve happiness.

Additionally, if a manager has 100 competence, it never drops.

The figure displayed for merchandising in the income section appears to be cumulative rather than just for that turn – should not be the case.

People still come to the stadium even if you jack up the ticket price to unrealistic levels.

It is too easy to get away with bribing the refs – i got a team that had a lower championship standard of player (27 or something) up to 6th in the premier purely through constant bribery. 3 point deduction is too lenient.

A fun game but the bugs need ironing out as they make it close to unplayable.

  5. Also it is too easy to sell clubs with barely-manageable debt burdens for 100s of millions.

  6. correction to the first post I made – -ve competence, not happiness.

  7. Also when you get past a certain amount of cash it rolls over back to a negative number, don’t know if it’s possible to use 64-bit integers? or some other trick for getting around the issue?

  8. Another bug – when the club repays the balance of a chairman loan early, the money does not come back to the chairman.

Also, when a club is worth more than the greatest value that can be calculated, surely it would be better to say that nobody has enough cash to buy it rather than just valuing it as 1 pound?

  9. if anyone out there’s needing a tester, I’m open to being hired by the way ;)

  10. Another easy way to break the game:

    1. Take over club.
    2. Put ticket prices down until club becomes more popular
    3. Sell now popular club for about 3000% profit
    4. Repeat with other clubs till you have as much cash or points as you like.

  11. This also has the advantage of being able to bank points at the best exchange rate.

  12. Yet another comment or two: when you take over a club, even half way through a season, it always has 0 cash which is not realistic.

It should also be possible to do due diligence and look at club accounts when you buy them. If this is too complex to put in, at least add their credit rating to help give an idea of their financial state!

  13. Wow! Thanks for all the bugs. We’re publishing a new version shortly which should knock some of the big issues on the head, as well as making it a bit harder to cheat your way to the top. Watch this space!

  14. @ Alan : thanks for your feedback also. No, you haven’t misunderstood, however, at some point in the game, I was making hundreds of millions from merchandising only and trust me, I would have seen that kind of money in my club’s account :)
I watched carefully, but no merchandising money comes in my weekly income. It would be great if i could cash that in, I would be the biggest football tycoon.

Still, I was slick enough to make money from stadium attendances, TV money and transfers.

Again, thank you for the answers and i hope to hear/read from you soon. Keep up the good work !

  15. Why don’t I get any money for merchandising? I’m losing hundreds of millions each week!

  16. I was wondering why this game seemed so confusing…it’s a fun game, but there are LOTS of problems. The merchandising money thing is infinitely puzzling – the game sort of tricks me into believing that I have more money than I actually do. It’ll say something like 20 million for merchandising, but my club budget will be like 8 million. Preposterous. And yeah, if you make a loan to a club from your personal account, and then repay the full amount, the money just somehow vanishes. Please fix this stuff – the game could be good.

  17. See, Bill is having the same problem.

@Bill: hang in there, I know how it is ! Good luck !

  18. The merchandising problem is that it is displayed wrongly. It displays your total income from merchandising to date rather than just the merchandising for that week.

Look at the difference from week to week and that will give you the real figure.

  19. In any case it seems to be fixed now!!!!

  20. actually maybe not! It wasn’t there at first but then started giving me strange figures again!

  21. Needs a sequel.

This is a brilliant, unique game and deserves to be remade more than things like Ultimate Football Manager (which is pointless and as anyone who wanted to play it would just playing Football Manager).
